Japanese Entertainment.
The Foresters' Hall presented a pretty scene on Thursday, the occasion being a, "Japanese Entertainment," promoted by the congregation of tho Primitive Methodist i Church. The decorations, carried •jut in Oriental style, were pleasingly quaint and attractive, and there- I w«k an artistic display of the lanUrns and fantastic ornamentation d'ur te the hearts of the Eubtwn i peopl-.s. The work was carried out In Ahtsdcumes Andrews, Ward, llellringcr (2), Connett, and Messrs White and Buttimore, who are to be complimented on the result. There wns a charming nrray of Japanese' costumes worn by several of the young ladies and a number of the children, which contributed materially to the picturesque p"Vc>. .r, c. Hclltinger and Mrs Andrews conducted a stall ronlcte with an assortment of fancy goods, needlework of considerable merit, and serviceable articles, while a stall for the disposal of refreshments and sweets was in charge of Misses Nicholls and Clarice Solo.
The afternoon programme included :in exhibition of fan drill by a number of childrea in Japanese; costume.The little ones, who wcra instructed bv Misses W. Nixon and Stewart, acquitted themselves most creditably), the spectacle meeting with much approbation from those present. A musical programme added to the pleas-, ure of the gathering. Thi* items included a violin solo by Mrs Dabson, a duet, by the Misses Ward, and a piano solo by Mr Clolding. The unpropitious weather militated
against the attendance, but still there was a good gathorii/g in the
ewiunm Excellent 'bmiimces was transacted at the stalls, and the attractive programme put forward wad heartily enjoyed. The fan. drills by the children were repeated wiUi euccess, and Miss Chong (solos), Miss Loesch (solo), and Mr Loesch (violin solos) contributed to the musical programme. Several diverting competitions excited much hilarity. Mcsdames Dockrill and Smith were the judges for the shirt-ironing contest, and amidst laughter and applause Mr Deare was accredited winner. An item in keeping with the Japanese colouring was a competition for the juveniles in rice eating with chopsticks. The difficult task of judging the fancy costumes was arirustodj to Miss Chong and Mr Dcare. ' Miss Nicholls was adjudged the wearer of the best, dress in character, while Miss Ilrockenshfro secured pride of place for liost appearance. Supper was served by Mesdnmea Moon, LloescH, G. Ward]. Brto'C.kenshire, P. Bellringer, the Misses Ward (2), and other ladies.
. The entertainment was generally idmitt«l to be a most successful ono of its kind), and the promoters [are to be. complimented' on their work. Proceedings closed at 10 n.m. with the singing of the National Anthem.
As the inclemency of lira wealthier interfered with the attendance to some extent, it is intended to repeat the fixture m about a fortnight's time.
