Technical Education.
SUPPORTED BY CHAMBER OF COMMERCE. In his annual address, the President of the Chamber of Commerce (Mr M. Fraser) referred to tho movement for the advancement of technical education in this district. Although it might not come strictly .within the province of the Chamber of Commerce Ihe had been asked to br;ng the matter before the Chamber. Towards the erection of a Technical School the Ratepayers were to be asked' ito sanctrion a contribution of £4OOO (to be provided l)or on tihq new 1 schedule)) t and this would carry with It a Government subsidy of iflOjOOj lto co: |t to the ratepayers would bo on'y £3O per annum during the currency of the Borough loan, and this seemed a small sum to pay for tho privilege) conferred by the establishment of the school. In Auckland no fewer than eight instructors had/ been specially appointed, and in other places technical education had been initiated during the last year or two. In addition to the Government subsidy, in the regulations under ,tho Education Act liberal provision is made for assistance towards the building and equipment and for capitation l on tho attendance. "As the matter is one of the utmost public importance," remarked tho President," and as smaller towns than New Plymouth are, in respect of technical education, getting ahead of us, I hope the Chamber will give this scheme its favourable consideration."
This was received with approbation By members. It was referred [among other matters to the Council [of. the Chamber.
