ARBITRATION COURT.
NOT A DEiriVCOLLECTING AGENCY, | (Per Press A«s«elaU»n.) CILIUSTCHUKCH, June ia. At the Arlidtration Court to-day it was announced that agreements had been arrived at between the partita in the disputes between the Slaughtered' Assistants' I'nion and the South Canterbury Tallow and Manure and General Labourers' L'mon and the Christchurch and Canterbury Meat Companies. The Court congratulated parties on arriving at an amicable understanding. The agreements in both cases are to be embodied in the awards ojf tho Court. In a case in which an employee I sought to recover the difference between tho minimum wage and that which he received., the President referred to the question whether, tho Court should be made a diV>:t<-collec-ting jnhchino, and said that unless somo actual difficulty could be suggested preventing cases like the one before the Court being dealt within the Magistrate's Court, it wa* nianifostjy unfair that the Arbitration Court should have its time taken up investigating matters that could be settled by a Magistrate. The Arbitration Court had not destroyed the Jaw of contract and hiring, and a claim for wagesi might bo made in the Magistrate's Court. The effect of the Act was merely to restrain persons from making Con-) truc'ts which did not come within tho terms of an award.
