AUCKLAND HACING CLI.U. , The long looked for contest for the I Gre.it Northern Hurdle Hnce will j eventuate to-day on the Ellerslie course, and with large acceptances 1 everything augers well for a success- 1 ful gathering. The meeting is a i I thoroughly representative one, the principal stables in the North Island i having horses engaged in both flat and obstacle events. For some reason or other tho Auckland Racing Club have not adopted the double event machine, an innovation that has gained great popularity in Wellington and Canterbury. The Grand National Meeting opens with the Maiden Steeplechase, twoand a half miles. Defoe figures at the head of the list with list 81b. He made his debut at the cross-country game in the Wanganui Steeplechase, and distinguished himself by giving a good exhibition of jumping, acting as runner-up to Evening. Defoe has a moderate lot to beat and he should account for the opposition if he is to have a say in the big race on Wednesday.! Major, Lingatid, and Ijudo have shdwn they can jump and should furnish the runners-up. I shall place Defoe 1 Lingard 2 Major 3

A field of twenty-live appears oa the card for the Muiden Writer, seven furlongs. The field is composed of an average lot, among which the winner appears to bo well concculed. Hookby —a five-year-old gelding by Brookby —ran two fair races at Takapiina, and should run well forward. Rookby, Noteorine, Sir Hector, and Loo Delaval appear a likely quartette, and the finish may result in Hookby 1 Kolt'orine 2 I-eo Delaval 3 The next event is the plum of (he day, the Great Northern Hurdle llace, two miles ami a quarter. In my last week's notes ] reviewed the position on the Wanganui running. Trumpery, Cavalry, lliss' King, Irish and Waitarere should run prominently, and the placing of the judge may I.e. Trumpery 1 Cavalry 2 Miss King ft The Maiden Hurdle Race; is the next event. Newtown, who lias not yet been seen out in a hurdle race, {s top weight. Lady Hune, if reserved, will be hard to beat, but she claims an engagement in the previous event Commonwealth, on Wanganui running, is well in- Coronation is reported to be doing good schooling. I like Lady Hune 1 Newtown 2 Commonwealth 8 The Cornwall Handicap, one mile, contains material for a splendid race. Pari tutu, Chivalry, and Full Cry aro a formidable trio, and to separate Ihein I shall' give my vote to Chivalry 1 Pnritutu 2 Full Cry 3 The Pony Handicap, s;ven furlongs, follows. A field of niine have paid up. I like the chances of Orange and Hlue Fashionable abd Sonoma, in that order. The lirst day's programme concludes with the Ladies' Bracelet, one mile and a half, gentlemen riders. Lyc'a has demonstrated that she can gallop well, and with a good horseman up should be hard to beat. I will take L.vela 1 Trumpery 2 Cyrano .5 OTAKI MAORI U.C. MEICTINC.
