A SEWERAGE SUGGESTION.

(To the Editor.)

I feir.—l understand that the Council has decided to lay a sewer in Gill Street, and is neglecting to provide for the l o w lying property between Cover and Eliot Streets. On behalf of 'the ratepayers and citizens may I be allowed to suggest that the matter of finance, amounting to a few pounds' cxpendituru, should not bo allowed to inlerferv wi-tb the principie involved, of securing sanitarv conveniences and protection for the whole of the taxpayers. It is, no doubt, a source of anxiety for the present Council to finance on a limited amount, but would it not be much better to have the whole street inj abeyance until a complete and thorough system can be carried out, gather than temporarilv econoini&e by an incomplete service. It may he contended that an automatic lifting gear can be instituted, but no one would argue that this is to be compared with the natural grade whei-*; such can bo obtained with so little expense, mainly by lowering the grade. I hope that some more capablo person will endeavour to enlighten our Council on the advisibility of altening their decision,, .since ianprovoment in the present sanitary conditions is the main object in 1 'View.— i Tours, etc., Aj A. PIKETT.
