Generally speaking, matters aic quiet in sporting circles, though there was plenty of speculation locally 'on the Egnxmt Meeting. The .weights are due to-day for the W'anganui Winter Meeting, also for the Great Northern Hurdles', and Great Northern Steeplechase, the issue of which is awaited with interest. Gyrene broke down when running prominently in the Telegraph Handicap on the first day of the Egmont Meeting. Stepniak holds the premier position as ssre with eight winners, their winnings totalling £2053. Merriwee is second with seven, for £1605. followed by Multiform, five o'. his progeny winning £1605. St. Bill refeaied his Hawke's Hay performance by annexing another double at Egmont on Wednesday. The Taranaki cast off, Sandy, continues td pick up a race of two in the South Island and generally returns a good price. The Hon. Nominations for the various contests close on the 18th inst. One of the most remunerative rides during the recent A.J.C. Meeting was B. Carslake's on Famous in the Dohcaster Handicap. The race was run in 100 seconds, and Carslake is said to have received £SOO for it. A Wairarapa scribe s-tates that the syndicate owning Maniopoto was willing to give £I3OO for Sir Tristram, but the offer was not entertained. ASHBURTOX COUNTY R.C. WIN- . TER MEETING.
