Whiteley Memorial Church.
A WELCOME TO MR FOSTON. The public tea and social hcftl in connection with the Wliiteley Memorial Church on Wednesday evening, as an appropriate means of welcome to Mr H. Foston, who is taking up the Coast Mission work of the circuit, proved most popular and snicissful. The tea was held in the Whiteley Hall at 6 o'clock, and was a very pleasant function, while the attemtanco was in every way satisfactory, the ladies who made the arrangements and provided the tea arei to be congratulated on ,th(S <lainty manner in which the tables were laid. The following ladies superintended! the tables, eight in number :—Mesclames Buttle, Carter, Ncalc, Plkett, Williams, Boon, Chatterton, MorHhcad, Ilooken, and Gibson ; Misses White,. Howell, Ramson, Cannell, Hodder, Sole, Okey, and Ambury. There was a large gathering at the reception and concert which followed, a considerable number of visitors! from the Coast district being' present. The chair was occupied by Mr C. Curler (circuit steward). An enjoyable social evening was spent, various addresses incidental to the occasion being interspersed with an excellent musical programmo. The chairman extended to Mr Fos- •, ton a very cordial and hearty, welcome to the district, and wished -him every success in his arduous work. 1-lls diatrict includes Tatara,, Okato, l'ungijrehu, Rahotu, and other localities.. Mr Carter expressed the opinion that the circuit in securing Mr Foston for the work had the right man ill the right place, as he had left Ilavelock with an excellent record in every department of work,. Messrs Hughson and I'oaice joined in the welcome on behalf :o( th 0 Coast district, as did Mr Turnbull, who is relinquishing, the work, after a period of ten months' service. -the musical programme was vc.rv much appreciated, applause foeim'* - hearty and encores frequent. Miss Alcorn, a visitor from AsKburton, was exceedingly well received. Her first song, '"lilie Promise of Life," was rendered in a very effective ' manner, and in response to a recall She gave a simple pretty n, umber.
