GISBORNF., April 28. Henry George Lomax, on remand, was to-day thorged with having obtained £l2O by false pretences on March 24th, and £750 on March 301K, from Common, Shclton and Co, The charges were taken separately, and on each accused (wh'o reserved defence) was committed for Itriuli

In his evidence, W. B. Common, merchant, stated that in the Ix-giu-ning of January accused called upon him and stated he came from Australia, where his father was ft very huge sheep-farmer, and that he had suffered very severely by the drought, having lost considerably over 10,000 sheep. Accused, said he wanted to make a start in New Zealand, and had somo capital with him, with which ho purposed dealing In •ome sheep and cattle. He wished to know if Common, Shellon and Co. would assist him. Witness . replied that the firm would: be agreeable to do so in moderation. Accused stated he had a little under £2OO. He wanted to b,uy stock for re-sale through Common, Shelton and Co. Further evidence showed that there had boon several transactions. At Morere, Prin (an auctioneer) had interviewed accused (who said he had about £BOO with him) and told him the firm considered his actions suspicious. Lomax sold If that were so perhaps he had better give witness the cash ho had with hint. Witness replied he thought it would bo better if he "did so. Lomax then opened a portmanteau and took out a cash-ibox, unlocked it, and handed witness therefrom a, roll of notes requesting that he should count them. Witness counted tho roll and found that it contained 33 £2O notes, and other money, £609 altogether. Lomax stated he hud a balance of £SB in the Bonk, and at witness' mjuest guve him a oh«me for that amount, but refused to R|ivo an order for the sheep that he sari were being brought down. A telegram a/terwaids receiud from accused, then in Christchlurch, «taw cd he was returning in a week" and that he had an order for 1000 shi-en and would fix up the matter then.
