THE MANUKAP-NEIV PLYMOUTH DAILY SERVICE. '(.To the Editor.) .hl ir,-Th " ann , ou "<:cn»tut iu the News this morning that there was „ po Ssjb'lity of the northern vice ueing interrupted during too c V o I n nt^ m ° n , l , hs ttuuM awak «» »<>™ concern m this community. To maintain frequent and rapid communication with the larger contn* of population is one of the test means of .einovmg the torpidity, of which w 0 have hoard so much lately as being characteristic of New PljumuUi, and or which there is real danger of becoming chronic. Mr Morgan of the V S S Co., has done the public a great service in intimating the possibility „f such a contingency transpiring as the disturbance of the mail connections between north and south. This steamer service- is not simply a matter of interest to New Plymouth. It i 8 a „ imporTant link in the daily mail services of the colony. What reason is there that the 150,000 people who live north of New Plymouth should be cut off from the rest of the colony for two or three davs in the week, in regard to maj'j arransoinonts ? Whal political sin have these people committed that thoy should bo mulcted after this fashion, when a small addition to the- subsidy would induce the companies to continue the running of tho boats. Nobody wants the companies to run at a loss, but when tho Government is constantly boasting of its huge surplus, anil that the postage returns are amongst the l»st revenue raising sources under Government control, surely so large a portion of the public as shown above Have a right to expect some pryyiligos in rpturn for uhut i« paid into the public exchequer, I hope the Chamber of Commerce will take up this matter and with other public bodies in Auckland and elsewhere promptly assure the Postmaster Gcncral that for once New Plymouth is awake, and that we arc not going to be relegated to a position « quarter of a century behind l,ho (lines.—l am, etc., PROGRESS.
SCHOOL COMMITTEES. (To the Editor.) . Sir,—] have been resident in this town for some time and have often wondered how it was that so litt'e interest was taken in the public schools. 1 have tried to ascertain what was the cause of this indifference, and have come to the conclusion that a chief reason was to be found in the fact that verv few people indeed had any knowledge or information of what was going on in connection with tho schools. Of course .those in authority mav excuse themselvca by saying that the fullest information would be supplied to any person on. mu.k'jitg application to them. Hut, \h<i puhlie should not be put to thin trouble. If the committees and teachers desire tho public to take a warm and intelligent interest in the work of the schools, the fullest information should be regularly published in the daily papers. ,t' o me it was ouile refreshim* to read jour excellent report of the Central School Cumml meeting on Tuesday Inst. Jtt every other town of importance great proiuiuenw Is given to tlvs nmttvr, and regular statements aro mad,. at< to the number of scholars on the roll, average, attendance, etc., etc. Any changes in the stilfs art also re|;orted. In i|,j s - wav. Die public aiv induced to lake pcfvunl interest in ilmse ladies an.i gentlemen who arc sj>eiit(ia* their lives in teaching tlv children. At present. I venture hi su>. verv few people indied know who constitute the teach-, Ing stalVs at the i-everal mlwhilh in I New Plymoiieh, and consequently we take little 0,. no Interest in them or thoif wovk. I hope the Dally News i will follow up its good work and give us regular reports o,f what is done nt thp kv hoo) c-mmnittee meetings.—l am, nil)., PARENT.
