School Commissioners.

MONTHLY MEETING. The regular monthly meeting of the Hoard of School Commissioners was hold at the oilice of the secretary, Mr F. P. Corkill, on Friday. There wero present : Mesars It. Cock (chairman), Wiulo, Faull, and SiinjtK-on. —Liability for Special Rates.— Mr Oeo. Hurrell's letter a» to his liability for a special rate was dealt vith by the Hoard's solicitor, who reportod that this was a question which had from time to time Itwn raised in various party of the colony, but 011 which there was still very considerable doubt. It was not a question affecting the Board at all in the caso of Mr lfurrell, who had applied for advice, and the Hoard was therefore (in Mr Samuel's opinion) scarcely warranted in incurring the o.xjvenso of his considered opinion, which would entail a substantial fee.

It was resolved on the motion of the Chairman, Mr Wade only dissenting, that Mr Hurrcll be informed that the question is not one which directly affects the Board, and that he must act as he deems desirable either in paying the rates or in resisting payment. —Exchange of Land.—.

The special resolution passed on March 29, relating to the exchnngo of certain land with Mr H. M. Skeet, was duly confirmed. —lnsurances.

In the absence of Mr Jennings, M.H.-R., the resolutions of which ho had given notice were moved hv Mr Faull, seconded by Mr Wade," and carried unanimously as follows (1) That the Board's resolution of February 9, 1900, relating lo insurance be rescinded. (2)"" That tenants desirous of doing so bo permitted to insure with tho State Firo Office.

The secretary reported that he had obtained from the General Mnnager of the State Firo Office a letter of warranty as roquired by the Commissioners, —Eltham Council.—

Messrs Boddie and Dive, on behalf of the Borough Council of Eltham, waited on the Hoard with tho object of discussing the possibility of a settlement of the Board's claim without further litigation. After ful) consideration of the matter in a friendly spirit, Messrs Boddie and Dive offered £3OO as full compensation.

The offer was accepted,. providing tho money bo paid over by May 1.

—Noxious Weeds.— On the motion of Messrs Wade and Simpson, it was decided that the attention of the Inspector of Noxious Weeds be called to tho state of part section 25, Hua and Wniwnkaiho district, leased to My C. T. Hundie, and that he Ih* requested to take prompt action with resjject to the same. —Hoard's lSequirements.— Messrs Weston and Weston wrote on behulf of M« >l, O'Connor that he wus taking steps to carry out the Hoard's requirements with regard to the general cultivation of his farm, —An Intestate Matter.— The Hoard's solicitor reported on the position of the lease held by the late Mrs Mary Ann Cogger, of Paten, who had died intestate awl without means. It was resolved that Mr Kverard Gilmour bo empowered to demand and accept payment of (h(i i )ait overdue in respect of section 7, block 13, Town of Pa tea, which had been leased to tho deceased, and also whether demand bo mudo or not to recover possession of the property on behalf of the Hoard. —Finances.—

The Treasurer reported a crpdit balunco of £377 lis. —Applications.-^

I). Webster to Raymond Smith, parts sections fiOO. etc. Xew Plymouth ; A. King to Mabel Lowten Ellerm, parts sections 422 and 423, New Plymouth. T. H. Exlcy, suli-lessee from M. Kelly, applied for consul iu « transfer of his lindiii" lea no of section 1, block 4, lluwera Survey District, to Win. Cowern. The npplicntion was granted, subject to the approval of the Hoard's solicitor. The undcr-lcuso from li. Slatter.v to 11. J. Hughes, of section 20, lllock 3, Waimate Survey District, 79 acres, was approved. At this stage 111' Cock was called away, and My Wadp was voted to the chair.
