STATESMEN-LIKE ACIH PACIFIC CABLE METHODS. (Received April 18, 10.17 p.m.) SYDNEY. April 13. 'the Chambers of Commerce Conference adopted u motion 1 that tin lime is opportune for the settlement of the New Hebrides question. One delegate remarked that the action of the Federal Government in relation to the Islands of the l'acilic, so l'ar, was' of a character which suggested that it might Ik- I letter for the Commonwealth to drop tinkering with them any longer, and leave them eo the Nrw Zealand Government, which might be •expected to do something statesmanlike. What was the use, he asked, of subsidising a line of steamers to the Islands when > settlers could not send their produce to Australia. A motion was also passed to the effect that business on the l'acilic cable, by improved methods and increased activity in management, might be considerably expanded, and the annual loss might be avoided or converted in'to a profit. The loss was to be attributed to the want of business methods on the pan of the Postal Department.
