MAORI EDUCATION.
TCHAKINA UIHLS' SCHOOL OPENED, (I'er Tress Association.) WANGANH. April 13. The Turakinu Maori Girls' School, whieh has been established by the Presbyterian Church, was opened today by the Premier in the presence of about 400 jx-ople, including MesWood, Vile, and ltoMmlngtoq, M.'s.H.R., und visitors from various parts of the district. Air Soddon, in his speech, emphasised the importance of establishing schools for Maori girls. 11l the past attention (had been paid to the education of Maori youths, but that education had been to a large extent wo stud on account of the Maori women they married lioing unlit to mix with Europeans, and consequently causing the men to stay in the kaiangus. Schools such as the Turakina school would go a long way towards remedying this.
The proposal to establish this school was made only sixteen months ago, but was so enthusiastically laken up by the Presbyterians throughout the colony that the school has bien opened free of debt, and with a surplus of £SOO.
