The Municipal Abattoir.
o A SATISFACTORY ANNUAL REPORT. The annual report of the work done at the New Plymouth abattoir for the period ended March 31 was submitted by the manager (Mr U. J. Stone) at Monday night's mooting of tho Borough Council. "The abattoir was opened' on May 24, 1904," the report sot out, "by the killing of a bulloclt for Mr I{. W. Dixon, butcher. New Plymouth. Tho official opening by the Mayor and Councillors and a large number of leading citizens took place on Juno i 9. "During tho year the following stock ha» been slaughtered and px*' amined by a Government inspector : 351 cows, 1019 bullocks, 108 calves, 6739 sheep, 1233 lambs, and 71G pigs. In addition to this output 1111 tripes have been cleaned, and 23 calves' heads and feet cleaned. "Tho extras amount to 14s, and rents £37 4s, the total receipts amounting 'to £1032 18s 2d. "The following is a list of the stopk condemned for various causes as not being fit for human consumption :—33 cows, 12 bullocks, 1 calf, 40 sheep, 3 lambs, and 6 pigs. Trie disease most prevalent amongst the cattle and pigs is tuberculosis, and in the sheep, pleurisy. "I think thp residents of New Plymouth niter- a glance at those figures will quite appreciate the prompt acItion taken by the Council in erecting an up-to-date abattoir, where stock is dressed and handled by the most sanitary methods, and inspected after slaughter by Government inspectors, thus minimising the risk of eating the flesh of animals suffering from one of the most dreaded diseases—'tuberculosis. "During the year several improvements have been made to the drainage, and when tho cnnwmplutod' alterations are done they will assist the work, both in saving of labour and cleanliness."
in conclusioiMho manager drew attention to the amount of work entailed as manager of the abattoir. Tn. flddiyion to superintending the slaughtering of animals, the making up and collecting of accounts occupied a considerable amount of his time. In fact, this work was sufficient to keep one fully occupied for the whole of his time. The manager added that ho highly appreciated the valuable assistance rendered to him by the abattoir committee, and the town clerk and borough engineer in the carrying out of his work. Tho financial statement showed : Slaughtering 551 cows at 5s 3d, £144 12s 9d ; 1019 bullocks- at \os 3d, £267 9s 'Jd ; 108 calves at Is 9d, £9 9s ; 0739 sheep at Is 2d, £393 2s. 2d ; J233 laui'np at Is 2d, £?1 18s 0d ; 710 pigs at 2s6d, v £B9 10s ; illll tripes cleaned at 4d, £lB 10s 4d ; 23 heads and feet cleaned at 4d, 7s 8d ; extras, 14s ; rents from paddocks, £3O ; rents from reserve, £7 4s ; total, £1032 18s 2(1. The report was regarded by the Council as very satisfactory. The Mayor thought the Council should be thankful for the excellent manner in which the, manager had carried out his work.
