Theatre Royal.
THE VAN JtIENE COMPANY. To the regret of the public, and also of the management, the performance which was to have btcn given at the Theatre Royal last evening by Van ilicne, the celebrated actor-musician, and his talented company had perforce to bo abandoned, avthe S.B. Rotoiti, by which tho oinpany took passage from Auckland, did not arrive at New Plymouth until 9 p.m. Tho news of the delay came as - a great disappointment to the theatre-going public, especially to many country visitors, who had come into town to witness tho renowned production, and there is no doubt that if the performance had been duly presented a splendid "house" would havo been recorded. The management had purposed giving two performances in New Plymouth, but, as tho dates ore booked ahead, the company will now only Appear here for the one evening. "The Broken Melody," to be staged o-night, is described us being romantic and full of pathetic and dramatic incident, and patrons will hear Van Biene piny his celebrated 'cello solos, niado his name famous wherever he has appeared. Tho principal is supported by a company spocially selected for the colonial tour. Tho production is said to be altogether admirnble in "its conception, and quite distinct from anything yet presented to the Australasian public. The company is due to appear at Stratford on Thursday evening.
