Science Apparatus for Schools.
The chief-inspector reported to the Education Board's meeting on Wednesday on the subject of upparatus for science instruction in schools, as follows : "TheJ lack of simple apparatus for demonstrating the simple experiments ie:pjjred by the primary syllabus is felt very much, and teachers are very much handicapi>ed in giving instruction. Science loses its educational value if pupils are merely told what takes place under crtain conditions and their powers of observation and reasoning are in no way developed. I therefore recommend thnt ifoa board subsidise schools for the purpose of procuring such apparatus under the following conditions : (1) The subsidy to be at the rate of £ for £ up to £3. (2) From £3 to £5 at the rate of 10s for £l. (3) The application to be accompanied by a schedule of tho apparatus to be procured and its cost. (4) Thfl schedute to be approved by the inspectors. (5) The subsidy to be paid whon the accounts, are certified the inspectors or when the receipted accounts are forwarded to the office." The chief-inspector further remarked, that in all other respects the schools were fairly up to' date in their methods, biut this- matter should bo attended to without delay. After the general discussion it was resolve,! on the motion of Mr McDonald that the inspector's recommendations with regard to science apparatus be given effect to, ' the amount of subsidy to bo paid on the inspectors certificate.
