Tongaporutu.

(From Our Correspondent.) The great event of the year, the regatta, came oil on Tuesday, 14th inst., on the flat at the Tongaporutu bridge. Tho weather was excellent, and the attendance n record one. The whole of Tongaporutu and Mokau were there. whije while many came from Awakino, Urutl,, and Urenui, More vehicles crossed the mountain that day than have over done so- befoiij in nny one day.—Financially it was a great success. Mr 11, O'Donnell had a booth on the ground, and sieemed to be kept busy. The land sports were well competed- for, the entries in every instance being large, but the water sports were an utter failure. There is one good canoe, O'Sullivan's, the rest being slow. Year after year tho Meteor wins all- the rncos. The handicappers for the water events are all behind the age, hence O'Sullivan's success. There were too many events on the programme (thirty), and it was late before they got through it. The managing committee had nothing ready, consequently much time was lost at each event, more especially at the "chop" competition, when each competitor had to square his own block to the proper size. There was also pjlenly of room for improver inent in the starting. Except in the "chop," the money stayed prottv well in the district. There was a ball and supper in the hall, which was largely uttended. Mr «. T. Jennings, M.H.H., opened the ball precisely at 8 p.m., u „d the dancing was kept up with spirit till sunrise.. Mr R. O'Donncß had chargeof the supper, and it was a b|g affair, ove,- sjxty couples being at tho table.. H
