L. Meslayer, consulting engineer, forwarded a copy of correspondence received from the British Electrical Engineering Company in reference to street lighting. As the number of lights had been increased from 70 to 128, an extension of time was necessary, deferred to the Electric Light Committee. —Loan.— Cr. Cliff moved and Cr. Wilson seconded. "That a special meeting of the Council be held on March 2 at 7.30 p.m., for the purpose of passing resolutions intended to operate as special orders authorising the Council to borrow the sum of £OOO for providing the balance of the cost of abattoirs and the erection of necesnbaltoirs and the erection ofnecessary outbuildings in connection therewith, and striking a special rate of Jd in the pound on the annual value of all rateable property for such loans, ami interest nt 4 per cent, per annum for a period of 41 jeurs."— Carried. Abattoir Report.— Mr C. J. Stone reported for the month of .January that there were killed at the abattoir 07 cows, 88 bullocks, 15 calves, Kls siM-ep, 230 lamb's, and 70 pigs. The fees totalled £10.") 2s 3d. Seven cows were condemned for tuberculosis and three sheep for various causes. He was compelled to employ an extra hand during Christmas and New Year week. The fees' for December and January amounted to £213 His Id. —Received. —Resignation.— W. Carter sent in his resignation as assistant slaughterman at the abattoir. —Sanitary Report.— Inspector Kendall reported on the sanitary matters' ooming under his notice. One case of scarlet fever was reported. Noxious weeds had been eradicated on several sections. He had warned several shopkeepers about encroaching on the footpaths. The reply to the complaint was that the records do not show that any fence I has been erected on the grave in question, and that the Council is perfectly satisfied with the way in which the sexton performs his duty. —Tenders,— The Council accepted the tender of Mr J. Hayes at £5Ol 2s Od for the supply of stone. The other tender was that of Mr J. Colesby at £037 ■ls 2d. —Tarring Paths.--Cr. Cliff moved and Cr. Wood seconded "That the engineer be instructed to put an extra coat of tar on those paths having only one coat at present."—Carried. j
