SODDEN DEATH.

(Per Press Association.) DUNEDIN, Feb. 22. J. S. Jordan, manager of the NewZealand Coal and Oil Company's mines at Kaitangata, died suddenly to-das'. It was reported to him that a fire had broken out in the Castle Hill mine, a not uncommon occurrence. Ho went down with jsome men to take the necessary steps to cope with the' fire, while I the underground niainager went to get appliances aud another gang of men. Suddenly Jordan fell down, and he died soon afterwards. He had been in poor health of iate, and J at preii-nt it is not known whether jthe fumes from the (ire affected him, |or whether the excitement eaustd heart trouble. Jordan, who was a married man about forty-live years of age, only came to the colony a few years ago. The latest news is 'that the fire in thte mine is well in hand.
