Taranaki Education Board.

The monthly mooting- of the Jlourd was held on Wednesday. Present— Mr J. Wade (Chairman), Mrs Dougherty, Messrs McDonald, Monkhou.se, Maekay, Faull, and Morton. I —Architect's Ileport.—

The architect i (Mr J. Sanderson) reported that the spouting round the residence and school at Lower Fgmoivt Koad required repairs, that a new tank and down pipes were requisite and windows needed re-hang-ing. At Dell Block the tank was being cleaned out and lime washed, and a new filter provided. Tenders were submitted for additions to ami raising Fitzroy school. Tenders for Makahu school would he received on 28th inst. The contract *or additions to the West Knd school had been signed, and good progress made with the work.

The report was adopted. Sir MonkhouKe brought up the question of-improving the ventilation jat Salisbury roatl school. After some discussion owl hearing the architect's views on the point it was jdecided, on the motion of Mr Faull, ;to instruct the architect to do his .best to improve the ventilation.

—Chairman's Heport.— The Chairman (Mr . Wade) recommended handing over St. Michael's Square to the Central School Committee, reserving the right to lorn; or more sites for technical or other buildings. He had committed the Hoard to a week's rent of temporary quarters for a portion of Kit/roy school children. The Inspector had been granted two weeks' leave of absence. Miss Dempsey half been temporarily appointed to T?ahotu, Miss S. Thomson pupil teacher at Fitzroy, Miss E. Grant pupil teacher at Inglewood, and Miss <i. Xtichardson temporary assistant at Urenui. The items were taken seriatim. —St. Michael's Sjquare. — Mr Fnull objected to handing over the whole of St. Michael's Square to the Now Plymouth Committee. The block should he reserved for porpoises outside the school work, such as agricultural and technical schools, museum, etc. liy adopting the chairman's proposal the committee would have more land than they could kee|i in order, and the Board Would have to supply the funds to the detriment of more urgent requirements. He moved that the committee be allowed one acre in addition to what is now attached to the school, and that the hoard retain the balance. • —Fitzroy School.— The chairman's action in making temporary arrangements for the Kitzroy children was approved, and the remainder of the report adopted. —Fencing.—

The Inspector reported recommending a grant of £8 towards the cost of a now fence and gate at Tongaporuhu, rendered necessary owing to damage by a landslip—the gate to be of a permanent character .—Adopted.. —Stratford School.—

A lengthy report from the Inspector on the staff of Stratford School and District High School was considered in committee. On resuming, it was resolved, on the motion o Mr Monkhouse, that the report bo adopted, and the recommendations regarding the rc-organisation of the stall referred to tho Stratford Committee for their approval before being given effect to. The Inspector further reported that the Deportment had granted £6O for the septic tanks at Stratford and £4O for fencing. —Regulations.— A special committee consisting of Messrs Wade, Morton, and McDonald reported having rev.iaxl the Hoard's j regulations and regulations for scholarships, but asked for an extension 'of time for the revision of the pupil toachers' regulations. I After considering the alterations proposed, the Board adopted the report, and authorised tenders to be called for 300 copios.

I —Painting of Shelter Shed.— A request by the Waitui Committee for a grant of £2 for painting the shelter shed was complied with. —Levelling Groundsl.—

The trustees of the South! Road iWcsleyan Church wrote stating that | the rent of the room used by the West End School would be raised 2s a week.—Agreed to. I —A Novel Request.—

—Exhibition Buildings.— | In reply to a letter from the Exhibition Committee, they are to be informed that the Hoard does not con'sider the exhibition Vrtiildings sui'tjabje for technical school purposes, and request that the buildings be removed us speedily as possible. —A lioad Needed The Denbigh Road Committee wrote I asking the Board to co-operate in endeavouring to get the Derby Hoad opened from 'tho York Hoad to the jßadnor ltoad for school trallic. Mr Mackay moved that the applicants be recommended to lay their case before the Department through Mr Jennings, M.H.R., and also to | apply to the Mamganui Hoad iloaixl ilbr assistance. He considered that j the Board could not spend money in making roads). Ho had heard it I whispered'that the work could be done ijy the sAtlcrs in one morning. The motion was carried.

—Appointments.— The Selection Committee reported having considered applications for vacancies as folfows Central School (assista ift}. —ThViro were four- applications, and the committee recommended the following names- to be sent to the committee : —Miss A. Blacii). 8.A., 113 ; Miss 11. E. Dempsey, license to leach ; Miss M. C. Gilbert, Dl. Cardiff (sole teacher). —There were ,six applicants, the following being selected for the committee's choice : —Miss B. Black; Mr IS. G. Humphrey, Dl ;■ Miss C. M, McCarty, 1)2. Whangamomona (sole charge).— Two applicants :—Mr H, D. Hewlett, D;i, Selected'.
