NORTH ISLAND BRASS BAND CONTEST.
(Per Tress Association.) AUCKLAND, Feb. ID. The following are the results of the first competitions to-day : 11. Flat Solo.—Wheeler (Auckland Battalion) 10(1 points, 1 ; Allen (Tarn naki Garrison) 100, 2 ; F. Albrecht (Hiiahine Battalion), 98, 3; Fit/ell (Kaikorai) 96, 4. To-day's proceedings in connection with the contest undoubtedly constituted an epoch in the history of band music in this city. The chief function of the day was the Mayoral reception and garden party given by the Hon. E. Mitchelson in the Domain. After speech-making various bands performed, each showing a proficiency that in some cases rose to brilliancy. The Kaikorai and Wauganui Bands both received the compliment of well-deserved encores for their selections, and icach of the other bands won generous applause. A march played by the massed bands' at'the end was magnificent. Between TOOO and 8(100 people were preswt.
I The Mayor welcomed the hands on behalf of the citizens. Mr Mitchelson said that though the local bands had not been very successful yet, J what they had learned since the ari rival of the southern bands would be, he had no doubt, tin inducement tp them to work hard, and aim at turning the tables on visiting bands jn th(j future. Jf the public would only realisp its responsibility, they wo.uld-be able in every town to provide at least one good' band. He was informed by those competent to judge that unph' year there was a marked improvement in the music at these gatherings, and that this year there was a great improvement on last year.
•Mr 11. Cohen tended the warmest thanks for the cordial welcome accorded in Auckland to visiting bandsmen.
Mr \\. S. King, judge of the contest, and Mr Ilolbon, secretary to the association, also spoke. In the evening quartette and trio parties were engaged in competition, the majority of bunds sending in representatives. The programme comprised a really beautiful selection of linmbrrs, and the standard of playing was jii almost every instance high. Those two' events resulted as under :
