NORTH ISLAND BRASS BAND CONTEST.
(Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, Feb. lit. The North island Brass Band Contest, which is being held this' year in Auckland for the first time,, opened to-day at His Majesty's Theatre, when three sections ol' the solo competitions wore completed, one each in the morning and afternoon and the third in the evening. Ihe contest is recognised l by bandsmen generally as the greatest test ;n tl >° colony for years-, as three bands* that have generaMy won the contests amongst them (Wellington, "anganui, and Kaikorai) are on this occasion competing, and mo-tine; each other for the first time The judge is Mr W. T. King, of Christchurch. laore are eleven full bands competing, and from five others so- ; loists and quartette parties are entered for various events, making a total oi sixteen 'bands represented. Following are the results of the three compehons so far, 120 being the possible mark's : J* Plat Baritone Solos.—A. Martin (Wanganui Garrison), 112 marks, 1 ; P. Dixon (Wellington Garrison,)), ion' marks, 2 ; H. Penno (YYaihii Federal), 1)- marks, 8.
