THE LATE ARCHDEACON MAUNSELL.
A MEMORIAL TABLET UNVEILED (Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, Feb. Hi. A handsome brass tablet to one j memory of the late Archdeacon jMaunsell, the well known Maori misIsiionary, was unveiled at St. Mary's I Cathodrai yesterday morning by the Hev. A. G. Purchas. The ltev, G. Afaunseil* a son of the late Arch•deacon> and a considerable number , cf Maoris were present. Canon MacMurray, iin addressing the co-ngrogar lion, said that Robert Maunsell, a I young Irish clergyman, who was a great Hebrew and Greek scholar, j came to New Zealand over 70 years | ago. He spent some months j» acquiring the Maori language, and . preparing himself for his 'great work, | the 'translation of the Kible into | Maori. He subsequently worked as .a missionary for thirty years., and upon the outbreak of war in 3865 Ihe came to Auckland, whore he took the appointment of incumbent of St. ; Marys, I'arhell, filling that position for seventeen years'. The tablet adjoins one erected to the memory of the late Archdeacon Clarke, another j>vell known Maori missionary.
