Hurricane at Nine.
MUCH DAMAGE DOXE. On December 28, 1904 (writes a Xiue correspondent), the weather |>ocame stormy, and* on the following day the wind increased to hurricane force, accompanied by a mountainous sea. The waves were fully 50ft high and broke on the cliffs 50flt to 100 ft v above ordinal high-water mark. ~ Quantities of shingle were carried y over the cliffs and deposited inland. All woodwork belonging to the jetty, beacons, etc., was entirely demolished, but the jetty itself, which is of iron, sustained 'no injury. Much damage was done oh shore. The : Government House garden was completely ruined, and some injury was done to thi? house' itself. The ground was covered 'with cocoanuts and leaves, which were stripped off the trees. Tft. 1 effect on the'copra crop will be disastrous, as most of the young nuts remaining on the trees are injured by salt water and will drop off. The bananas near the coasl line are completely destroyed. The * well-known schooner Ysabel, Captain Ross, was on the coast at the time, and sustained the full force of fht gale. Grave fears were entertainer foe her safety, owing to the terrific i'V* sea. We were much relieved when she was again sighted on the 31st Captain Ross had an anxious time, 89 ho had a number of passengers and horses aboard.
