The formal opening of the Fitzroy Club's green took place yesterday afternoon in the presence of a very largo gathering of Ixowlersl, and friends.
Mr 11. Dempsey, president, in an excellent speech expressed the pleasure of the members at having such a large concourse to grace the opening of the green.
Mr James Paul, in his characteristic and happy way, •gave a short address both to the players and to the ladies, to the latter of whom he bespoke leniency if their husbands or sweethearts were delayed at the green occasionally beyond the hour at which they were, 'expected to return. He also cordially invited any of the young members who were desirous of "obtaining hints as to piny to visit the town green, and he would do all in his power to enable them to profit [jby his experience.
The Mayor, Mr Hj Cock, also spoke, pointing) out that the new green, though not in the borough, was only a few yards outside of it, and he hoped in a year or two to see not only the bowling green but the whole of Fitzroy in the borough.
Mr E. M. Smith, M.H.K., congratulated the club on. its inception, and on the excellent start it had wade, and wished it every success. Mrs Dempsey set the jack rolling, and after hearty cheers had been exchanged play sturted. The Garrison IJand was iin attendance, and enlivened the proceedings, while a number of the ludies handed round tea and refreshments. Altogether the opening was thoroughly successful, and when the green gets into good order it should prove a greut attraction.
