A New Industry.

a STEEL CASTING IN AUCKLAND. The New Zealand Herald reports that a public exhibition of smelting and the production of steel castings was given at tho works of the New Zealand Steel Company, Limited, Stanley Street, on Friday afternoon, and was attended by a considerable number of interested spectators. The company have placed in position the first Martin-Siemens gas generative furnace (capable of treating five tons at one charge) introduced into the colony, and with its aid, together, of course, with other necessary plant, are converting malleable scrap and pig iron into steel castings of all sizes and designs, as required. In the past it has been customary for mining, engineering, and other firms to import all steel castings, and it is claimed by the company now operating in Stanley Street that , these can be produced locally at a cheaper rate than the imported article, and of equal quality, in addition to which the saving of lime must be of considerable importance to those requiring castings. Several castings were completed on Friday under the supervision of the managing expert (Mr John Davies), who has had wide experience in this particular class of work in England and America. The process, from the tapping of the furnace containing the molten metal to the completion of the various articles cast in tho moulding boxes, was followed with close interest by those present. The new industry may be expected to develop into one of considerable dimensions and importance.
