SUGGESTION FOR DEFINITION. (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Jan. 27. A point of interest, and one which is constant!? cropping up and leading to friction in educational circles, is touched upon in a letter written to tho Minister for Education by Mr Wilford. M.1f.11. The totter deals with a cuse at Petone, but after referring .lo it Mr Wilford adds : "1 desire to bring under your attention the anomalous position of school committees in this colony. They arc clothed with a barren title of little importance and called upon by education boards to look after all local mutters pertaining to the school curriculum. Passing on one side cases where a most disastrous local effect may be brought about through an injudicious appointment, it is a wonder to me that men of energy and ability will seek to fill such positions. Will you take steps in the near future to have the powers and functions of school committees defined and elaborated, ho as • to change the present state of tilings under which—though committee* may become liable for wrongdoing or even accident to an employee—their power on matters of ordinary school appointments is absolutely nil, and tbeir consideration of matters audi as the present application are not even being considered T"
