HOLIDAY AIAKEIIS SHELLED, (IVr I'ress Association.) AUCKLAND, Jan. 23< The Star states that the holiday makers jit llrown's Hay on, Snturdnv had added to their other attractions an idea iof what life liiusl be like when in town' under artillery lire Shrapnel shell fell both in Drowns bay and I!ons' Hay, and those sending a few days at the former place were not pleased at the novelty. Those who came back to town this morning from llrown's Jl;iv brought with them several shells,'and one boy had guthered on the beach about 1(1(1 little round bullets cast abroad by the exploding shrapnel. The S.s. Orcwu, when going into Drown s Hay on <Katurdav afternoon blew her (whistle rei>entedlv to let the firers know it was on a pcuivful mission. As the little boat went out from llrown's Hay a shell exploded, but not near enough |„ do any damage. Captain Hosworth, was practising beyond Castor Oil Hay, and it is understood that tli<i custom is for the I'ermaiuuil Force to put up targets, aiu| also to have out danger parties, whose duty it is to signal "cease firing" if occasion arises. Evidently t the shells went further than was unticipuled. and no doubt the danger parties considered it quite safe so long as they were going right over the clifl into the sen. The buttery was using an automatic range finder.
