FOREIGN MISSIONS.

I Thbre was an excellent attendance lat Whitclcjl Hall last evening to Ihear the Rev. J. A. Crump give an •address on mission work in New [Britain. Mr Crump has been employed in that gitfup for the past eleven years, and has been compelled to relinquish his work owing to J ill health, the climate being specially i trying. The mission has been opened for less than 80 years, and the •progress mado has been most remarkable. Besides the directly spiritual results indicated in the annual returns required by the church, the group has been i largely opened to trade and commerce, and law and I order arc maintained under the rule |and authority of the Cor mail Government. The speaker last evening gave several telling instances of how ,certain individuals had been'brought under the imfluence of Christianity, 'and the habit and spirit of their life wholly changed.. Mr Crump .was accompanied by a native teacher, who gave an address which was interpreted by Mr Crump. Both speakers gave information as to the urgent and pressing calls for teachers and missionaries, a demand that could not be met, notwithstanding its imperious! character, owing to .insufficient funds. Church extension .work was hindered for the same reason. The special appeal now being made throughout Australia and New Zealand was with,a view of supplying these demands. At the conclusion of the ■ addresses a collection jwas taken up in aid of the mission fund, snd on the motion of the Rev. J. N. Buttle hearty thanks were accorded to . the deputation. Mr C. .Carter made an efficient chairman, [and Miss May Canneli presided at the organ.
