Club Handicap :—The Cup field was a better one than that which contested cither the Auckland or New Zealand Cups. Achilles (who was coupled with Ghoorka) was in a good position from the word "Go," but he was the first horse beaten. The son of Medallion was done with i before the mile post was reached. I Nightfall, who was on the rails, got j second j]away, and ran in company with Achilles and Red Gauntlet to the six furlong post. Here the Multiform filly went on with Jeanne d'Arc, the other pair dropping back. Ghoorka and Armistice moved up,to the leading pair at the hall-mile post. Jeanne d'Arc had the race won at a mile and a quarter, but Nightfall was not done with. Ridden out she scored by a head from Hclodeon, who came with a great run on the outside at the finish, and many people who : were not in as good a position as Mr Hartgill to judge thought he had won. Jeanne d'Arc was only beaten for second .place in Mm last few strides.^.Quarryman was a ilcngth away, fourth, and Armistice fifth. The latter was not too well handled. Achilles was sixth, followed home by Ghoorka and Convoy. . The last three to finish were Joe Chamberlain, Red Gauntlet, '• and Bowman. Dennehy (rider of Melodeon) got on the rails at the back, and Injured one of his feet. He had to be taken to the ambulance room. But for this mishap he might have won. The official time (was given as 2min 35sec, but experienced private watch-hold-ers made it faster. This was Mr Stead's fourth Wellington Cup success, the previous wins being with Beresford, Uniform, and St. Michael. Of the £1736 'on the double machine, the : Nightfall—Petrovna combination was backed 158 times, and the dividend paid was backed 23 times, and 'Jeanne d'Arc—Petrovna 29 times. Achilles, judged by his performance to-day", is evidently not the horse he was a year ago. Convoy (ridden, by R. Derritt) covered a good deal of ground. The Wellesley Stakes proved the easiest of things for Munjeet. She was on the inside, but Hewitt allowed the field to pass him, came round on the outside, and scored easily from Marguerite. Mr Stead was present to see Munjeet win. The Racing Club Handicap was a test run race, and produced a close finish between two of the candidates. The Carterton-ownod mare Jeanne d'Arp held a prominent position throughout, and won all out by halfi a length from Convoy, in 2min ,7sec. This time equals the record put up by Gladsome in the same race last yean, and is only (we second outside tHe Australasian record put up by Hova at Flemington. She was well ridden by F. Jones, who rode Gladsome last year. Another coincidence about the race is that Convoy again filled second place. The Vanguard gelding has had the bad luck to act as runner up in several important races this season, and' the change of ownership does! not seem to bring about a. change of luck. When Convoy appeared to make his run two furlongs from home, he was eoing so strong that he looked like beating Jeanne d'Arc. The 'lattfer was riditenl with great judgment by J ones, .who got every effort out of his mount.- Jeanne d'Arc is a cast-off of the Hon. J. D. Ormoud's, and jras bred at that gentleman's Koramuj stud. She ran prominently this Beacon at the,Woodville, Manawntu, iWairarapaf, "and Pahiatua meetings, and baa proved a most consistent performer. She is trained liy fc e r owner,- Quarry-man was very sere. He wenjt very short in his preliininary £ and Hewitt pulled him up to see whether anything was amiss .with him. Considering the solid nature of the going he ran a good race.- Achilles ran a better race than tn the Cup on Saturday, finishing fourth. Melodeon did not run up to bis first day's form, and was one of the last to finish. The haid going appeared fo affect him. Mr Stead started both Golden lily ,and Munjeet in the Wellington Stakes. Too Yaklhurst pair carried £1202 of the £2136 invested on (ho race. Neither was ever dangerous, although Munjee't made an effort to get. up two furlongs from home. The Hon. J. J>. Ormond nearly brought 'febout a surprise with Sir Tdwtrnm, a homebred toil by Sir Lancelot, from Thame. He was only by a 'head by Solution, who ctrrk-d 71b extra, for a win earlier in the day. To get home the Soull mare had to put up record time for the .race. The sum of £709 was Invested on Qjer double on the Ra'NM.; C,u"> and Metropolitan Handicaps. The Jeanne d'Aro-Solution combination was- i ock ed- eighteen times, and paid £:'.s 9s. The other horses in the Telegraph Handicap were backed with the n'inner! of the hjig race as follows : Per * trovna 118 times. Red Gauntlet 4, * Shrapnel Shell 4, Good Intent 4 Petrovna would have paid £5 Bs. Three jockeys were injured durinf the afternoon. E. Cotton, whe fe*H off Noneen, received a cut undci one of his eyes. Langstojie, whost mount came to grief in the Ponekc Hack Handicap, suffered a fractured collarbone. Gallagher was severclj bruised about the shoulder wher Lyrist came down hi the same race. The well-known gcldtng Dundas By Perkiit Warbeck ll.—Reverie, re cently broke a fetlock' and was destroyed. Sungod claims an engagement h the next A.J.C. Derby. The light-weight D. King, who has Keen with H. Goodman for somi time, has joined E. Cutts' Choke bore Lodge stable. Mr G. G. Steads HotchEiss—Lad\ . Gertrude colt recently met with ar accident, and was destroyed. * ■
