MOIiTHLfMEETING.
The monthly meeting of the Taranaki Education Doaid was held on Thursday, when there were present : Messrs Wade (chairman), Adlam, McDonald, Mack'ay, Monkhouse, I'null, Morton, and Mrs Dougherty.
I —Architect's Ke|Ort.— I Mr das. Sanderson, architect, reported that the alterations at Kaiinata school would bo finished . in a few days ; the lime-whiting at the Stratfond dairy school was satisfactorily completed, and the Nguire repairs will be completed in u few days; the work of putting in a now coiling at Courtonay Street School will be completed before the school opens. Plans for the Makahu school were laid 'before the board. Tenders 'or the additions to West Kn-d school were la-id before the board.
The report was adopted. —Chairman's licport.—
Th-' Chairman reported having | made the following appointments:— Slrnlford, Miss K. Maxwell, temporary, assistant ; Kaiinntn, Miss V. Smith, temporary assistant ; iia!.j>tu, Miss ]. Deiupscy, lcni|)orary assistant ; I'ihama, Miss .1. M. Itrennnn, temporary assistant ; Whangamomona, Mrs Stockwell, temporary . teacher. Mrs Henderson has boon rej quested to" continue tit Albertßoad until a teacher is appointed. Owing to the carnival coinmittie keeping the exhibition open longer than iwas at first intended, and therefore not being able to hand over the ■ Central School at the date specified, had tec postpone the re-opening of the school until the 30th inst. Mr F. r. <:orkill on behalf of Fitzgerald's Circus Company,waited on him ,vith a request for permission ,to erect the circus tent on Poverty Flat for one night, Saturday, 21st jinst., promising to pay 30s for the privilege ; he had granted the ro j quest. The chief Inspector had vis[ited Makahu school, and he directed that a copy of the report be for- , warded to the department. The board having exchanged the site | originally set apart for the school for one that the inspector considered mot suitable, representations had been made' with the result . iliui. the board had now received word, from the Commissioners that tne original site had been ad|hered to. Sir E. 0. Gibbes, Assistant Secretary for Education, vis-iu-d | the ollice on Wednesday in connection with the Central School lire, ami the Finance Committee took the opportunity of consulting him o:i several matters in,connection with the building grant. I •hi the motion of Mr Muckav, seconded by Mr Monlihotise, it was decided to make application to the ■ Education Department for the sum of £l, the expenses incurred by the board in sending its inspector to | inspect the school site and interview the settlers at Makahu at the request of the Minister for Education, and that the Land Board be thanked for facilitating the selection of a site.
The report was adopted. —Dairying Classes.—
The Stratford School Committee § wrote suggesting applications to the Government for a grant for the establishment of winter dairying classes.
It was decided to reply that the | board is already taking steps to deal ; with the matter.
| A request from the same committee for additional accommodation .was referred to the chief inspector. | Mrs Smith, Mangupcpe, wrote advocating that Mangapepe was a i better site" for the new school than Natiero, as shortly there would be no children within attending distance :of the latter place. I It was decided to *jrward the letter to Mr Williams, whu previously ai>pliod for the school.
—Finance Committee's Report.— The finance committee reported I [that after conferring with the inspector and architect tenders were called for additions to the West End I School, on the amended plan submitted at last meeting. Eight tenders wero received. The amount auIthorised -by the department on the original! plan was £193, and thoA j commit tee conferred with Sir E. O. Gibbcs as to the advisablencss of I proceeding on the amended plan, and he approved of such a course. The committee therefore recommended 'that- the tender of Mr M. Andrew at £4lO lie accepted, e. In addition to this the cost of furnishing blackboards, etc.,, would probably absorb the balance of the £4'J.'i. The committee recommended that the |Tikorangi committee be supplied with maieerials for painting, which j.should be done under the direction of |Mr Faull. The request for a horse paddock should not b,c granted until a more permanent tenancy of the I !ground can be obtained. The Health |Departmen't should be informed that ' ■ the borough sewers are not yet laid j to a point to enable the Courtenay j Street School drainage to bo connected therewith. The committee us j 'yet was unulnle to make any reco-m- | Imendation regarding -the Stratford , District High School fees pending I receipt of a report from the inspector on the working of the school. | jThe committee reconunended as re- . | guards applications for expenditure:! Lower Egmont Road, that a ventilator be put in ; Derfjfig-Ii Road, that the committee be grunted the usual . subsidy of £7 10s towards cost of | erection of a shelter shed, and that a similar rainiest, be sent to the | iruti umd Rnupuha committees ; hat request of the Midhirst Com- i tee for permission to store firewood j in the old residence be refused, the ■building to be sold and removed, the I proceeds to lie the property of the committee. With regard to the let- I ter from the Fitzroy committee that . the department will grant £2OO, pro- i vided the hoard will find a similar [ sum for additions u'ud improvements, ;' the committee recommended that im- I mediately on receipt of the authority | rom the department for the grant I of £2OO, the. finance committee be authorised to call tenders for the ' i work, and to make an application | to the department, to expend the , j board's portion out of the muintcn'nnce grant, the tenders to be laid before the next meeting of the I board. The committee could not recommend the application of the Tariki committee for the removal oi the residence, the more especially as .the department will not sanction the xpenditure required- for the work out of the board's maintenance girant. and will not make any special grants for the erection or removal of residences. The committee rccoiirmclidcd that the architect bo instructed to call for tenders; fur painting as .under : Kaimata, Waihi, Oaonui, iWarea, Tataraiinuka, Tikorangi, Fungarehu, Kniauai, and Rahotu Schools, and Awnlunu, Upland Road, Kaimata, and Wnrea residnces. —Fitzroy School Mr W'eller waited on the board in eference to finding accommodation for the scholars at the Fitzroy School during the effecting of repairs, Mr Mackay moved that the chairman deal with the matter. This was carried. —A Difference.— Mr flreennway waited on (he board in reference to a difference regardthe forfeiture of a, deposit on a tender for painting at Warea, Rahotu. and other schools. After discussion, Mr Mackay gave notice ]'to move thai the resolution passed in Octoljer forfeiting the deposit bo rescinded,; —Resignations.— The hoard accepted the resignations of Misses A. If. Henderson, IN. Ilepworth, and M. Hickey, and Mr D. M. Scott. —Leave of AbsenceMr W. «.. Jloosc, Dudley Road School, was granted a fortnight's leave of absence owing to the death of his father. —l'iqii! Teachers' Examination.— Mr .1. W. Mayo, of Midhirst, wrote complaining of the uiifa'lrness of Uw pupil' fcat-hers' exnuiinations. He | said that first year pupil teachers >voro sent the Junior Civil Service papers. Mr W. E. Spencer said all pupil teachers ( no matter, of what year, had to undergo the Junior Civil Service examination. Mr Mackay moved, Mr Monkhouse seconded, that Mr Mayo will receive a full reply when the results come to 'hand. This was carried. —Confirmed.— Tire appointment of Miss Finchuin was continued'. —School iat Mukahu— The chief inspector reported that a small school at Mukahu was un>-, quest ion.rbly needed.
