The Sea Serpent Again.
A Strange Object. (Received Jan. 17, 11.28 p.m.) MELBOURNE, Jan. 17. The captain of the steamer Marathon stated that when at the Cape Captain RoWnson, of the steamer Arira'ttale Castle, reported that on the voyage from England his vessel struck a large fish, which doubled across the nose of the steamer. In its violent efforts to free itself' the monster marked the paint o?T both sides, showing a length of 57 feet), and it had a girth about the diameter of the ship's lifeboat. Its bead was blunt and barrel shapedv with tho eye fairly large and protruding. The body was grccny browq. with large dark spots on back and sides,, while the under parld .were dull white. Owing to its violent contortions the crew were unaijfc to verify whether the monster was a fish or a mammal. It was a quarter of an hour before steamer was freed? by then the. fish had sunk, tail first.
