Australia's Great Want.
♦— An Irrigation Scheme. (Received Jan. 17, 0.29 a.m.) SYDNEY, Jan. 16. The Premier (Mr Carruthcrs), speaking at 'a conference to discuss irrigation generally and Murray riparian rights especially, in view of subsequent decisions at the forthcoming Premiers' Conference, said it would be better to pay South Australia a lump sum for the rights the State considered it possessed. In regard to thef. navigability of the Murray, that would endanger New South Wales' chance :'of using its waters for irrigation purposes. Ten millions sterling would he required to construct works on fjthe various rivers of the State, and it would be absolutely impossible for a few years to come to go to London to borrow so largely. The question was —Could they not help themselves in solving the problem ? Was it not possible that those having such" a large stake in the country—those who would gain so largely by the help .of irrigation—might assist in financing some scheme ?
