THE EXHIBITION.
END OF THE SECOND WEEK. Ministerial Yisit. The second week of the exhibition closed with a very good attendance, between 2000 mid 8(1(10 visitors from ull pnrts of the province passing through the gates Tho Man. C. 11. Mills wus present with Mrs Mills and the Misses Mills, spending nearly twelve hours viewing the various I exhibits. The Maoris gave a hnku aiul poi games during the uflernoon, the Minister afterwurds expressing his pleasure ut nieetiiuj them. He said the committee owed much of thv attractiveness of the carnival to their presence, und it wus gratifying to see the two races fraternising in peaceful pursuits. The Maoris then presented Mr Mills with a mat decorated with sharks' teeth, the ladies receiving a poi each. The various side shows were again largely patronised. One of the features of the evening wus the excellent orchestral music supplied by Mr Garry's'band of seven skilled performers. The weather was rlnej nough to allow the band to j>er-1 form in the Italian Hardens, tho utractiveness of which was greatly nhanced thereby. The takings at the gate amounted to £6O, and the dining-room receipts totalled over £3O. The Premier has informed the committee that if the Greymouth bar allows the Hinymoa to cross in time he will ho in New Plymouth next Thursday. The principal attractions that (lay will bo the military tournament and the fireworks. Special items have also been arranged at Antonio's circus. THE EXHIBITS. A most interesting exhibit is that of the Kiro lirigudc Supply Company, of which Mr J, O. Uilberd, of Napier, is representative. This display includes all the latest appliances for fire prevention, and occupying as it does a stand Ju«t Inside the door is viewed with considerable interest. Amongst tho many articles shown are models of a pdumt steel lire-proof door, gauze fire-proof shutters, and a section of a patent fireproof wall. Those ore of such a character us to afford perfect immunity from fire, and should therefore find favour with all business men. Other interesting articles are a rubber landing pad and sliding pole, a foot gong for attaching to fire engine and hose reels, pompier ladders, hose holder, and Bro escapes. A three way , water jet for obtaining very high pressure is also shown. Altogether the exhibit is a very attractive one, showing to what a state of perfection these appliances have now been brought. To the experienced eye the exhibit of coloniul sole leather made by Messrs Frank Jnggcr and Co., of Auckland, is remarkable tor tho excellence of the quality and tanning. In the heavy leather especially, the display is highly creditable, a fact one of the judges, who has been 42 years in the trade, declared that he had never seen anything to equal it. This was awarded a first and special. I Tho medium and light leather is also good, and each class gained a first award. TO-DAY'S mRACTIOMS. The committee have decided to make no extra charge for all side shows under their control, with tho exception of Thursday's events. This evening there will bo an orchestral concert'and a performance of the Snow-flakes entertainment which was so successful a few nights ago. To-morrow the Maoris will occupy the concert hall. OTIO^CffiCUS. This thoroughly genuine attraction has been doing good husmoss at the exhibition, and on that score has been recognised by the exhibition committee, who have engaged the circus and housed the whole combination in the concert room. On Saturday night this wus jracked, and as each "turn" came on—whether by trained animal, juggler, or strong man—it was vociferously ojifilaudod. The public recognition of Sigmor l Antonio's show is fully deserved, and will doubtless l»e generously continued. On Thursday next a specially attractive display will be given, including feats of strength by Lex McLean, the world famous strong man, who invites any who desire to try conclusions with him.
