BOATING DISASTERS. MELBOURNE, Dec. 26. The Chrtstinas tide crop, o£ accidents and fatalities has been a large one, A fatal boating accident has 'oeen reported, and the linding of an upturned boat in the harbour points to several other lives having been lost. To-day. at \Villi a mstown, in heavy south-westerly weather, a party of live sailors, belonging to the Norwegian shfp Hovding, wlio has! been ashore, went out in a boat to reach their ship, lying in the istivam. A marine named Claringbould, of 11.M.5. Cerberus, noticed them handling the craft badly. and got a launch ready to go to their assistance. The men approached the Hovding, but apparently foiled to catch the rope thrown to them. Uiey drifted past the ship, and from their actions there seemed to be an argument as to how the boat should be handlofj. While they were standing up the boat capsized. Claringbould at onco started to their rescue, and on coining up to the upturned boat picked a man oft the bottom. A Port Melbourne fisherman, who was fortunately near, saved' three others. The fitioh man was, however, missing, and it is certain.that he was drown«kU Deceased's name could not be ascertained, owing to the crew not speaking English. • While Claringbould was proceeding . to the rescue of the Hovding men he sighted a boat swamped between St. Kilda Beach and the breakwater pier, Williamsiown. There was no sign of wnyone on the water, but two oars were floating near, and soon after two felt hats were noticed close by.: Owing to the strong wind and darkness Claringbould could not pursuo his investigations further.
