RUSSIA AND JAPAN.
YESTERDAY'S CABLE NEWS SUMMARY, LONDON, Dec. 7. The heavy fire from Metre Hill compelled the evacuation of Akasaka Hill fort, which was occupied by the Japanese. They also occupied two additional heights. The warship Poltava has been sunk, the tlayan is aground, and the Retvisan has been seriously damaged and is listing heavily. Another brief armistice has been arranged for the removal of the Russian dead.
French St. Petersburg advices state that a Chinaman has been arrested at Chan-tsin-mutun. He had in his possession an infernal machine, with which he intended to destroy General Kuropatkin's saloon carriage. (Received Dec. 9, 10.30 p.m.) LONDON, Dec. 9.. Although the Japanese gunners at. Port Arthur could only see the tops of the masts they hit the Russian ships 130 times, and destroyed many of ihe junks used to provision the port.. The Russians have abandoned their efforts to re-take Metre Hill.
