Mr Thorpe has been chosen Mayor of Motueka for the rest of the year. A benefit cricket match tendered to Hirst, the well-known Englislh player, realised £3703. Mr Townsend Maodermott, the futher of the Victorian Bar, received an unique birthday present from the Beindigo Law Institute. It took the form of a retainer, accompanied by the customary fee, and an. instruction to look after a young man named Macdermott. 86 years of age, who had recently been indulging in reminiscences in the Argus.

Deceased arrived in the colony in the year 1862 in the Queto of Beauty, which, on tho voyage out, was chased and stopped by the Alabama. Shortly after his arrival in Auckland he joined the Waikato militia, and served through the Waikato war.
