Mr Thorpe has been chosen Mayor of Motueka for the rest of the year. A benefit cricket match tendered to Hirst, the well-known Englislh player, realised £3703. Advice has been received of the death of Mr Higginson, one o'f the leaders of the French colonisation of the New Hebrides. King Edward, a oable message received last night states, 'has conferred a Commundership of the Victorian Order on Captain Scott, common Jer of tho Discovery Antarctic expedition, which has just returned to England.
The Right Hon. A. J. Balfour, British Primo Minister, owing to the irritation of a small vein keeps to his loom by the doctors' orders for a few days. A Cabinet Council was held on Wednesday in Downingstreet, owing to the Premier's indisposition, Instead of at the Foreign Office.
Mr Townsend Maodermott, the futher of the Victorian Bar, received an unique birthday present from the Beindigo Law Institute. It took the form of a retainer, accompanied by the customary fee, and an. instruction to look after a young man named Macdermott. 86 years of age, who had recently been indulging in reminiscences in the Argus.
On Oct. 26 there |>assod away at his residence, Kihikihi, Mr Patrick Hayes, one of the oldest residents of the district, n t the ago of 70 years. Deceased arrived in the colony in the year 1862 in the Queto of Beauty, which, on tho voyage out, was chased and stopped by the Alabama. Shortly after his arrival in Auckland he joined the Waikato militia, and served through the Waikato war.
