Cricket Notes.

(By Cow Point..; Owing to the tempestuous weather the match West End v. Omata was not continued on Saturday last. At last the cricket fixtures for the coming season have made their appearance. An Umpires' Association is badly required in Taranaki, and 1 hope to see steps taken l to form one. It is really lamentable to see the amount of unfair bowling allowed, particularly in New Plymouth cricket. I am sorry the North and South ends of tho district have seen fit to form separate associations. Cricket is not popular enough in Taranaki to be divided into two associa- [ tions. The Southern end men are annoyed at the secession of the Northerners. An easy way out of tho difficulty would .bo for the Southerners to join this 1 end, and form one strong association. The most popular fixture of tho season would then re-appear—the play off between the two divisions, North and South. The county symbolised by the Red Rose—Lancashire—has won the championship this season at Home, and the record is really a marvellous one. Sixteen wins and 10 draws, without a defeat, is a wonderful recond. This county also won the championship in 1881, when it came out without a defeat, but in thowc days only 13 matches were played, against) double the number now. In 1897 Lancashire was again at top, with 16 wins, 3 losses, and 7 draws. During the present season the county scored 27 centuries, of which number TyWesley was responsible for 7. Five batsmen scored over 8000 runs apiece in English cricket, namely, Abel, Itanjitsmghji, Tyldesley, Fry and Hayward... ■ Bosanquet, playing for Gentlemen ol England v. Cambridge L T n' v orsiity, bowling round the wicket; got five men low. Tho umpires were Barlow and Phillips.
