As briefly mentioned in our telegraphic news on Friday a steerage passenger was lost overboard from the Takapuna just before reaching tire Manukau Huads on her trip to New Plymouth on Thursday. From the statement of a lady paslsenger anJ the forecabin stewardess, it apnea's that Scully got behind a heap of sacks on the forecastle, and looking l'ound to seo if he were observed made a deliberate plunge overlioaid. The lady rushed up to the ollicer on duty, but was so excited that she could do no more than gasp out "Man," clutching the officer's sleeve. My this time several passengers had seen Scully striking o ut just us he was lost to view in the wash. Captain Ifolford at once stopped the engines, and lowered a boat, 'but hall' an hour's search was rewarded by nothing more than the unfortunate man's cap. Nothing could be j£|\ineiil as to his relatives, as he brouglii no effects on board, though it is stated he was a remittance man. A passing launch was hailed, and conveyed the news to Onehunga, while on, arrival the facts were communicated to the Collector of Customs, though as the matter had already been reported to Auckland it is unlikely any rfte\ps will be taken here.
