The Water Supply.

APPLICATIONS PROM OUTSIDE THE BOROUGH. The question of supplying water to lesMlonts outside borough limits came before the Borough Council at its meeting lost night, when Mr Orilliths, ol ltimu-ati-oet, I<'itzroy, waited on the council in support of application from several residmts in tliat street for a water service. The residents offered to subsc-Mjo £2U towards! cosft 0 I the work, the balance (estimated at £3O) to be paid for by tie residents, and ullowud in rebate oin the annual rates until the amount is refunded. Cr. Brooking said it was not good enough to rescind the resolution of tihe council that persons outside the borough should pay for the pipes if they accepted Mr Griffiths' proposition 'there would be half a dozen applications. Or. Wood agreed with Cr. Brooking. It would >open a bag door. The Mayor said all the revenue outside the borough would be all prolit and a reduction to the ratepayers. He hoped the time would como when Fitzroy would be supponi.<l. We did not agree with Cr. Wood, and hoped it would prove a tig' trap door to let all l'itzroy in. Cr. Wilson said if the present applicant Was granted a rebate, the whole of tho Avenuo ratepayers would be down on the council at next meeting demanding similar concessions.

Cr. Ahier thought tlie oiler a splendid one. He did not understand such narrow-mindedness. If ho had a commodity for sale ho would do anything to indueo people to buy. (Jr. CM thought it a stop in the .right direction, as they would have the right *to extend the mains. Cr. Hrownc moved that the application bo granted. Cr. Ahier seconded. Cr. Collie moved an amendment that tho application be granted provided the cost of laying tho pipes irom the hospital main is paid by tho applicants. Cr. Wood seconded, ujwi the amendment was carried. Cr. Wood then moved that any person paying for the laying of « main lju granted two years' water free of cost. Cr. ClilY seconded. With the consent of the council, Cr. Wood's mutioin was hold over, the mover suyiivg it wasi perhaps too Ij'ig a question to lie settled oil-hand. Tho amendment of Cr. Collis was then passed as a suUstentdve motiion. Cr. Urooking brought up the question of outside supply, mentioning the practice obtaining in Wanganui as the right one. He moved that a committee consisting of the Mayor, and Crs. Wood, Ahier and lirooUing te. appointed to report on the whole question of water supply outside the borough ; also the advisableness of introducing tho metric system. The motion was carried.
