Oil Stones Burned.

A BIG BLAZE IN WELLINGTON. (Per Presi Association.) WELLINGTON, September 10. A fire broke out in some kerosene stores on tiie outskirts of the city, at about 1u.30 laut night, and tuc stores of the Colonial Oil Company, Johnston and (Jo., and Kempthoine, Grosser and Co. were completely destroyed. Apparently the outbreak occurred in Kompthorne's, which was between the other two stores, and all three were a mess of flames when the brigade arrived. Large quantities of kerosene stored 1 /td the flames and prevented a il chances 'extinguishing the lire. J All the brigade could do was to save the adjoining stores of Briscoe and Co. Later particulars show that the Colonial Oil Company's and Kempthoine, Prosser'a -buildings were completely destroyed, and the linns sutler a total loss, but Johnstons was only partly destroyed. The Colonial Oil Company had in stock come 8000 cases of kerosene, uenzine, etc., and suffer a total loss, neither stock nor building being insured. Messrs W. and G. Tumibiull and Co. are the local agents for Messrs ivempthor,iie, Prosser and Co., and were insured foi £3200, made up as follows :—Stock in the bulk storu : Alliance £1750, Uoyal Exchango £9OO, Standard £250. Building : Exchange £luo. Dangerous goods store : £125, building £75, both in the Liverpool Globe. Johnston and Co.'s premises and stock, the latter consisting mainly of hard goods only, were partly destroyed. They were insured for £4700 in the London and Lancashire £2OO of the amount being on the building. The losb will not be known until the stock sheets arc examined, and that above the insurances ig not known.

The New Zealand Times reports that the Colonial Oil Company's building Was stocked with a large quantity of illuminating oils, including 8000 cases of. kerosene, 500 oi iienwne, 120U of low tewt kerosene, and a lange consignment of naphtha. In Messrs Johns-ton antd Co.'s premises was a large delivery of woolpaeks, gas-meters, uheep dip, salt anil some kei'oaene, while Messrs Le\in and Co.'s store was alsti said to have contains! a considerable assortment of highly conibustiiiile material, As might be expected, the Colonial Oil Company's store made the biggest blaze, ivral the scene presented, >as huge tongues of varied-tinted flame shot towards the murky-looking heavens, illuminatling the adjacent bills, and reflecting upon the anxious facts of the onlookers grouped along the Manawatu line, was weirdly impressive. A series of explosions of c-'iemicals gave an added tolK't) of realism to the scene.
