NOTES BY VEDETTIS. Very good nominations have been received for the Rangitikei R.C. Spring meeting, to too held on the 21st and 22nd inst., the coast being well represented from Wellington to New riymouth, and Wairarapa and llawke's Bay contributing their quota. Compared with last year, the nominations show an increaso of fif-ty-one. The Spring Handicap has fewest entries, though tho tweive nominations include Convoy and Halberdier.

The first day's racing at Morton takes place on Wednesday next. 1l the Handicap Hurdles Ostiak has been allotted 11.6, and should be hard to beat, and of the others I like Moeraki (10.8) and Otaio (11,4) WiSt.

The Flying Handicap includes some speedy hacks. Sea Lion (9.1) heads the list, and should go near scoring', il started. Catspaw (8.10) with a few pounds less I should pick to win, but Firelight (8.4) and Delamere (7. 12) appear to -be just as well in. Of the light weights St. Myra may be prominent. For 0 final selection Delamere looks likely t 0 have most say at tha finish.

The Trial Hurdles may bo between Springbok and Delight with Durban or To Kgiamu from the minimum weight division. Springbok has recent winning form t 0 commend him.

The Crofton Handicap of one mile would seem to lie at the mercy of the speedy Louisa (8.11), though Bonheur and Alas may havo a say. In the Tutacnui Welter Defoe is top-weight with 10.5, tout as he is reported to havo had slight bloodpoisoning in ono log, it may bo better to pass him over in favour of Alas (9,12) or Bcnmoro (9.4). 01 the largo numilier of comparatively unknown horses in the Hunt Club Cup, I should pick To Koha.ii, Sailor Lad, and Makuri to show the best form. The first day's running should he some guide to the following day (Thursday). The increase in the totalisator receipts on tho first day of the recent C.J.C. nieeting was not sustained, the total shortage on the amount put through last year being, £2282. Of the Taranaki horses sold at Christchurch recently, Lady Soult went to Mr W. T. Hazlett for 71gns. Huwera fetched 47gns. Tho well-known Fakir, belonging to Mrs Ablbot, of Wanganui, won his first raco In South Africa recently at Genmistown. He stated all odds us favourite, and made it no race. Airly, the winner of the recent CuulfieldG.N. Steeplechase, is said to have coine down on knees and nose at the obstacle where five others fell, through toeing! bumped by Equity. Tho rider made a marvellous recovery. Cruciform is entered for the Spring Stakes (ljm.>, graven Plate (Urn.), and Randwick Plato (2}m.) a t the forthcoming A.J.C. meeting. The first two aro w.f.a. events. Martian is entered in the same races.

Wairiki is reported to be leaving for Sydney on Monday next by the Moana. It is to bo hoped that h* wiil havo better luck than in the last New Zealand Cup.

The A.R.C. have barred hunters that have been in a licensed trainers' hands sinco September Ist, 1904. Marshal S o ult is reported to hav« been well backed for the double at the forthcoming Avondale mooting. He must ivavo improved since he was down hero last summer. Though showing good galloping power, he struck one as being of an uncertain temper. Submarine is reported to bo showing good form. The stock thrown by Merriwee are coming in for a good deal of praise, and he should certainly prove a success as „ sire. There are five yearlings by him on Mr Watts' station, all said to show a great deal of quality. Heart Whist and Gipsy Queen, who used to race on this coast, havo, I believe, paid a visit to this sire.

I would give racing men a final reminder of the sale 0 f Mr Watson'B blo 0 d stock, whjich takes place at the Newmarket yards at noon to-day. In addition to her engagement in the New Zealand Cup (of £2000), Okoari was nominated yesterday for a couplo of six-furlong events at the approaching Wanganui meeting, so that her new owner will have an opportunity of getting back a portion of his outlay at an early date.
