(Per Press Association.) CHKISTCHURCH, September 2. At tho Chamber of Commerce meeting to-day Mr W. D. Meares said that though the idea was prevalent that the area under root crops had enormously increased during the past few years, as a matter of fact the area was practically the same as five years ago, being 5(i9,(i39 acres now as against 569,075 in 1890. In regard to sheep he believed the falling-off in the flocks of the colony was righting itself. During the current year the number of ewes had incroasea by 150,000, having reached 10,070,041, of which number 5,070,720 were in the South Island.
