A resolution passed at a recent special meeting, authorising the stewards to spend £25,00U in tho purchase of land and the erection of buildings for a new course at Trentham, wus confirmed. Officers were elected as follows : President, Mr .1. U. ilarcourt (re-elect-ed) ; vice-presidents, Messrs W. 11. S. Moorhouse, and R. T. Turnlmll (re-elected) ; stewards, Hon. 'I J\\ Mncdcmuld. J. Will ins, J. VV. Abbott, J. Johnston, N. McLean, Ii J. Nathan, W. 11, Turnbull, am 1 . W. Ames.
MR FRIEDLANBER'S PROTEST. ' CHRISTCHIIRCH, August Ml. ' At a meeting of the Canterbury Jockey Club stewards to-day the i protest of Mr Friedlander agaiiutt' the stakes in the Criterion llandi-| cap, run last November, being paid; to Petro\na was considered. The following resolution was carried : The Appeal Court judges in the Gladsome and Bagpipes cases have la»d down a general principle that tho rules must be interpreted literally, regardless of what tho general custom has been on tho past ; the stewards of the C.J.C. therefore regret that they have no other course open to them but to uphold Mr Friedlander's protest, although satisfied that the entries have been everywhere accepted without being accompanied by information required by the rules of racing.
At the Royal Show (Melbourne), the New Ziealand-bred Almont was awarded championship in trotters. News from Sydney records a peculiar feature of the Epsom Handicap betting in a demonstration aga'inst Grand Rapids. For some reason or other he has been knock- 1 od back to 100 to 3, though he recovered later to 100 to 5. The hostility disturbed earlier backers. On the track Cruciform, assisted by Nightfall, ran a mile and a quarter in 2min lGsec. Grand Rapids covered seven furlongs in 1 min 84sec, Haloya put in a brilliant utile, compassed in lmin 45 see.
