MARITIME MATTERS.
VANCOUVER MAIL SERVICE. MELBOURNE, August 3. In the Federal House the I'ostmas-ter-General (Mr MaJion) stated that the New Zealand Government had inquired whether Queensland was withdrawing from the Vancouver service, and had expressed its willingness to take it over, the steamers to call at a port in New Zealand instead of at Brisbane. The Queansland Government had concurred in this, and New Zealand was informed of the /act in February, ibut nothing further had since been done. The Federal Government had no intention of altering! tho'subsidy or doingaway with any other contract. (The States that joined in the contract for the Vancouver service are Canada, New South Wales, Queensland, and Fiji.) FEDERAL NAVIGATION BILL. MELBOURNE, August 4. Captain Parsons, Superintendent of Mercimtile Marine, in his evidence before the Navigation Dill Commission, said that three-hl'ths of the crews of British vessels were foreigners, and that the proportion was rapidly increasing. Foreign vessels employed their own sailors. Some of the conditions regarding the treatment of seamen required amendment. The principal reuson for desertions was in order to get Australian wages.
