Railway Workmen Strike

(Per Press Association.) '■ CHRISTCHUKCH, July 18. It is reported from Scargill that thirty men employed on the railway works on the Waipara-Cheviot line went out on strike at dinnertlnie. to-day. They are mostly living at Waipara, and are taken to work by a ballast train every morning, some having quite twelve miles to travel. Their grievance is that their eight hours' day begins when they reach their destinations and ends before they leave, no account being taken of the travelling time. They thave only half an hour for dinner, jiving them no time to light fires. Tfe railway authorities state that the only report they have received is that :• a few casual hands knocked off work this afternoon.
