TIMARU-CHRISTCIIURCH ROAD RACE. (Per Presß Association). CHRISTCHURCH, JULY 16. Keen interest has been shown all day in the Timaru-Ohristehurch roaid vace, and numbers of people waited for every progress report. The road at the finish was covored for a distance of half a mile by nearly ten thousand people. C. G. Smith (Hastings) and 11. P. Arnst (Ashburton), who paced each other all the way, were the first to ;how in sight, riding together very strongly. Two hundred yards from the finish Arnst made his effort, and appeared to have the race in hand, but was blocked by a cart, and Smith raced homo twelve yards ahead. The crowd at once rushed the track, and the remaining men had difficulty in finishing. W. McKenzie (Oamaru) and W. Wulsh (Springston) showed up next h and rode a fine finish, McKenzie just beating Walsh ,'or third place. H. Henderson (Palinerston North), O. Neilson (Daanevirke), and Snowdei (Timaru) were fifth, sixth and seventh, finishing very close together. Then followed another bunch, of whom C. F. Baker (Ashburton) and J. Arnst (ChristcJiurch) were most prominent. Smith won the fastest time prize, 6hr 19ml 4 2sec; H. J. Arnst second, 6hr 19 :nin 3sec ; Baker third, Ohr 24min 52sec. McKenzie's time was 6hr 29min 54scc. These were the only times declared officially, but it is understood that Jack Arnst covered the distance in 6hr 30min. He broke his handle bar and injured his fork at Rakaia. but made good timo from there. Baker gets tlio special prize for fastest competitor receiving 15min or over, H, Arnst, Smith and Baker will represent New Zealand in the Warmambool to Melbourne race. *
