GAOL POPULATION.
NEW SOUTH WALES REPORT. (Received July 13, 11.45 p.m.) SYDNEY, July 13. The report of the Comptroller of Prisons is highly satisfactory. The gaol population has considerably decreased during the past twenty years. The vast majority of prisoners found themselves in gaol not so much as a result of offences committed, but because they had no money to pay fines. During the past five years over 40,000 people were sent to gaol in this way. In the Comptroller's opinion it would have been better for the community if alternatives were provided instead of so much gaoling. Drunkenness was responsible for a number of entries. The average cost per head was £3 12s 4d less than in the preceding year.
