Municipal Abattoirs.
OFFICIAL OPENING AT WAIWAKAIIIO. Another step in tho march of pro.gross that has of late been noticeable in New Plymouth was consummated yesterday afternoon, when in the presence of a fairly large gathering of citizens the newly-erected municipal abattoirs at the Waiwakaiho were formally opened by the Mayor. Promptly at 2.y0 his Worship the Mayor, accompanied by the members of the Borough Council, arrived and wire shown through the buildings, the method of working bi'-ing explained by the manager, Mr 0. J. Stone. The party then proceeded to the main door, where Mr Cock addressed those gathered outside. He said the completion of the building now aabout to bo opened marked a further progressive move in the History of New Plymouth. It must be a. source of satisfaction to people to feel that they could have perfect confidence in the quality of the meat placed upon their tables. Since the works had hem in operation two or three 'beasts had been condemned, anil, lie asked, how many might have gone undiscovered before, owing to the want of proper means for guarding •against disuase? Mr Cock made complimentary reference to the late Mayor (Mr E. Dockrill), durinr whose term of oflico the matter of abattoir provision had been taken in hand and given a practical start and to the late engineer (Mr Spencer, who had supervised the erection of the works, which had 'been carried out by Mr Grayling in a thoroughly satisfactory manner. He then declared tho abattoirs formally opened.
