Captain Carey, the popular commodore of the Vnion S.S. Co.'s fleet, is about to retire. A London cable announces the death, from consumption, of Madame Alva.

The Coventor has received the following cablegram from the Prince of Wales "Sincere thanks to v>nr Ministers and the people of NewZealand for their birthday greetings."

Mr 0. (J. Fitzgerald died in the Timaru hospital yesterday, aged 70. Deceased was well known in journalistic circles, and had been editor of the Timaru Herald since 1885. He was at one time member for Westland, and in the early days was warden and magistrate at Hokitik-a. Deceased was a brother of the late Controller-deneral.

The death is announced of Mr \V. Murray Thomson, at Kawhia. ilr Thomson many years ago took a good deal of interest in public matters in and around Hawera. and was very popular amongst a wide circle of friends. Latterly he had been engaged in running the Kawhia Settler newspaper. Yesterday's New Zealand Times states : "The Premier is expected to arrive back in Wellington from the North on the 10th inst. The reports as to his health continue favourable. If business permits, the AttorneyCencral (the Hon. Colonel A. Pitt) will leave for the South this evening. Accumulation of work may, however, prevent him leaving for a day or two. The Minister for Mines (the Hon. .J. McGowan) returned from the North last evening. Tne Minister for Lands (the Hon. T. Y. Duncan) returned from a short visit to Otago on Sunday morning, and will remain in town for some days. Tim Native Minister (the Hon. James Carroll) was at Waipukurau yesterday. lie is expected to arrive in town by the morning's mail train. The Minister for Customs (the Hon. (\ H. Mills) is at present in Wellington. The Minister for Railways (Sir Joseph Ward) is not expected to return from the South for at least another week."
