New Electrical Machine
The Hon. Charles Algernon Parsons, the inventor of the steam turtrinc for the propulsion of steamships, has recently applied through his patent attorneys (Messrs Baldwin and Rayward, Wellington) for letters patent of New Zealand for an ingenious construction of dynamo. The invention is of speciul interest to this colony, where water power is abundant and where electrical installations are literally and metaphorically in the air. If the anticipations of Mr Parsons are realised, «n advance in the electrical world will follow similar to that which resulted from the introduction of his steam turbine in the sphere of marine engineering. Electrical experts have experienced great difficulty in neutralising tho distortation of the magnetic field produced by the armature current. By his present invention Sir lai sons claims that in continuous 1 went dynamo electrical machines lie obtains a practically fixed line of commutation at all loads without sparking, anil a very great increase in the allowable ampere turns pet" inch diameter. The advantage of the new invention will be more apparent to the lay mind when it is stated that it is possible by its use to obtain from a dynamo of given size an increase of output of at least thiee times what lm« hitherto been wrWtainable.
